Fort Griffin Fandangle--Texas' Oldest Outdoor Musical
Is a late June vacation in your plans? Come to Albany to experience the delightful historical, musical account of the post Civil War era in Fort Griffin, Texas. Begun in 1938 as a senior class play, "Dr. Shackelford's Paradise", the outdoor epic soon took on a life of its own. It was so well received that an enlarged version was presented two months later as the "Fort Griffin Fandangle". The Fort Griffin Fandangle continues as a theatrical history written, directed, lighted, costumed, sung and danced by the people of Albany, a cast of 300 amateur, but seasoned performers. The Fangangle has its own Prairie Theater, an outdoor amphitheatre adding to the natural setting for all the livestock, horses, wagons, settlers, cowboys and outlaws that make up the cast of the production. All participants are local citizens and other interested people from the surrounding area and beyond. It is a celebration of the pioneer spirit that made West Texas what it is today. The production is always the last two weekends in June--Thursday,Friday and Saturday nights. More information is available at the link to the Albany Chamber of Commerce. Make your reservations early at Deep Creek Guest Ranch Bed and Breakfast to have a convenient stay to experience a piece of Texas history.
